We Are All Connected (Flint, MI)
Original mixed media painting: artist-made walnut ink, watercolor, gouache on 140 lb. Fabriano soft press watercolor paper: custom walnut wood frame with glass and charcoal gray mat: framed Size: 23 x 30" Image size: 15 x 22"
This painting was inspired by "Alchemy: An Artists + Writers Initiative," a group project that I participated in where I live in Kalamazoo, MI. The subject being alchemy, I took the notion of ancient precursor scientists trying to turn lead into gold, and turned it around to reflect our very modern predicament of humans turning gold into lead, metaphorically, at least. I am deeply angry and disgusted with how our state government shamefully failed the people of Flint with tainted water and Legionnaires Disease.
The Alchemy project also started a new adventure for me. I have a black walnut tree in my back yard and a few years ago I started making walnut ink. I've also started looking into other natural materials that I can use in my work. We need to get back to nature, not destroy it.
